When we first adopted Lucy, one of my first concerns was getting her a dog bed. Truthfully, I didn’t put a lot of thought into it; she was a puppy (a.k.a. “a destroyer of all things”) and I had no idea how big she’d get. So we bought her a small plush bed for maybe $15, thinking we’d get our money’s worth out of it and move onto something nicer.
That time came about 6 months later, after she, in a moment of hyperactivity, turned on her bed and ripped a decent hole in it.
When my coworker showed me a photo of her dog’s bed, I knew we had to get one for Lucy. Cue: The Cozy Cave.
What is a Cozy Cave?
In short: It’s a dog bed with a soft “roof.” Unlike other dog beds, the Cozy Cave allows dogs to burrow under the “roof,” which functions like a blanket, and sleep in extra cuddly fashion.
(I like to think of it as essentially a pita pocket your dog gets to sleep in.)
The cushion of the bed is cedar/poly blend for comfort, and the interior features a sherpa lining that the company says helps to keep your dog warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The front of the bed has tubing that, like a tent, offers some structure to the upper portion while still remaining flexible.
Why it’s Awesome
Does your dog like to burrow under the covers? BOOM. This bed is for you.
It took a few days for Lucy to understand what it was (more on that later), but once she got used to it, she quickly took to it. She sleeps in it just about every night and likes to hang out there when things get “dangerous” in the outside world (by which I mean “when the vacuum is on.”).
Another big benefit: it comes in just about any color you can think of, making it easy to incorporate into your decor. Like having children, having a dog means your definition of “interior design” now includes “weird, brightly colored toys everywhere and “oh, look, a random EAR from some poor creature of dog toy past,” but the Cozy Cave could honestly blend into the most stylish Pinterest-inspired living room of your dreams and no one would bat an eye.
And because it’s as utilitarian as it is stylish, the cover is removable via heavy-duty zipper and is washer safe.
Cozy Caves are available in three sizes (S, L, XL). An orthopedic version is available for older dogs.
How to Train Your Dog to Love the Cave
While Lucy is a natural burrower, the Cozy Cave didn’t come naturally to her. (True story: She got in it for the first time and completely flipped it on its side.)
We started out by putting treats in the bed, somewhat near the front, to encourage her to stick her head in there. As she got more comfortable, we put the treat further and further back until she had to entirely go in the cave to get the treat.
It won’t take long before your dog’s natural burrowing instinct kicks in and she thinks to herself, “man, this is cozy AF.”
